National Health Data Systems
http://www.nhds.com
nhdspres@bestweb.net

Originally The Knowledge Project, this site reflects the work of Steve Beller and others to use advanced research design to improve psychotherapy and other healthcare and social agency effectiveness. The site emphasizes the resulting reporting designs they offer to serve various social agency and healthcare needs.

The following quote reflects concerns that mental health services including psychotherapy could develop much faster with use of their research paradigm.

"Mental Healthcare's Greatest Need: Prove Efficiency and Effectiveness in Daily Practice

"It is paradoxical that while a growing body of research points to significant benefits produced and promised through psychological intervention, the future of the mental healthcare field is seriously threatened by what we call the information gap -- the lack of readily available, usable, universally accepted, empirically-based information for treating the individual patient, and documenting the specific benefits each patient receives."

Specific Issues, Causes

Dual Diagnosis, Kathleen Sciacca
http://pobox.com/~dualdiagnosis
ksciacca@pobox.com

Dual Diagnosis refers to co-occurring Mental Illness, Drug Addiction and/or Alcoholism in various combinations. This site is designed to provide information and resources for service providers, consumers, and family members who are seeking assistance and/or education in this field.
The ultimate goal is to improve our service delivery systems. Our present systems have evolved to address singular/discrete disorders. It is entirely possible to reshape our mental health and substance abuse systems, and communities of care across systems, to provide comprehensive services to all consumers. In doing so, these programs will be able to provide effective interventions for persons who have dual/multiple disorders.

Confidentiality of Electronic Health Data

"In 1995, in response to a request from the Vice-President of the United States of America, the Department of Health and Human Services assumed a leadership role in addressing four major issues surrounding the use of the National Information Infrastructure to advance health care and the public health: (1)telemedicine; (2) health data privacy; (3) health data standards;and (4) consumer access to health information. One specific health data privacy objective is the identification and dissemination of information about current best practices for ensuring the confidentiality of electronic health data.
"This bibliography of information sources that provide concrete guidance on the policies, procedures, and technologies useful insafe guarding electronic health data is a first step toward that objective."

Energy Psychology, Chi Kung, Subtle Alternative Treatment

The value (or make that existence) of subtle energy or other mysterious qualities used in such approaches as the tapping therapies, Asian energy medicine and flower essences is hard to defend, unless you have seen and experienced the kind of remarkable outcomes professed by proponents. Even so, what's really going on here? We won't try to settle any disputes here. Below are resources that may spur your thinking.

Energy Psychology, Fred Gallo, Ph.D.
author of Energy Psychology
http://www.energypsych.com
fgallo@energypsych.com

Energy Psychotherapy is a collection of approaches to psychological treatment that specifically address bioenergy systems in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological problems. These approaches are unique in that they do not solely rely on standard psychotherapeutic elements such as discussion, visualization, catharsis, and abreaction in order to assist the patient in achieving results. While traditional therapeutic features may be involved in the overall treatment, these approaches specifically include procedures that balance or otherwise treat the underlying energetic aspects of the problem. These therapeutic approaches tend to achieve results rapidly and painlessly.

Institute of Transpersonal Psychology
http://www.tmn.com/itp/index.html
itpinfo@best.com

"The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, founded in 1975, provides graduate programs in psychology and counseling. ITP builds upon the base of more traditional psychological and spiritual models, integrating experiential work with theory and research. The on- campus program offers a Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology and two M.A. Programs. The Global Program gives students the opportunity to study at any location in the world and offers both M.A. and certification programs.

"What is Transpersonal Psychology?

"Transpersonal Psychology has emerged as an independent field of academic study which encompasses and expands upon the "forces" of psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and humanistic psychology. By looking beyond the individual to a larger view of consciousness, transpersonal psychology creates a point of connection between psychology and spirituality
"Transpersonal experiences generally have a profoundly transforming effect on the lives of those who experience them , bringing a new understanding of great love, compassion and non-ordinary kinds of knowing. They are then more fully aware of the distorting and pathological limitations of their ordinary selves that must be worked with and transformed for full psychological and spiritual maturity."

"SEN's mission is to support the emergence of spirit in all its forms. We operate an information and referral service, answering calls, letters and E-mail from an international population. We assist in the cooperative effort, on behalf of both laypeople and clinicians, to connect those in transformational crisis with educated and compassionate helpers who are committed to facilitating the integration of numinous experiences. Through our own resources, those of our regional coordinators, and our member providers, we offer information and provide referrals in the caller's geographic area."

Beyond the Rainbow (Flower Remedies)
http://www.rainbowcrystal.com
rainbow@mhv.net  (888) 480-3529

"The theory behind the use of the Bach Flower Remedies is that each of
the flowers embodies a particular soul quality (or energy frequency).
When an individual resists that quality an energy blockage forms so that
s/he is out of touch with that aspect of his/her fundamental nature."

From the site: "The nice people at the Flower Essence Society agreed to let us reprint their 'Choosing Flower Essences: An Assessment Guide' on our website. They offer 107 flower essences, and the questionnaire helps to narrow down choices considerably.  You don't need a forms-capable browser to fill it out; however, you will most likely want to print it out.  You can find it at: http://www.rainbowcrystal.com/bach/fesquest.html"

Example content related to emotional health:

"Scarlet Monkeyflower (FES) is ideal for those who are afraid to allow
their anger to surface. This remedy helps one to accept the existence of
anger (or any repressed emotion) and to deal with it constructively.

"Larch (Bach Flower Remedies) helps to foster self-confidence, and
dissolves the limits one may have placed around oneself. In the context
of anger, it can help us to feel confident about how to express anger.

"Holly, a Bach Flower Remedy, is ideal for anger. When one takes it it
becomes clear that anger is but the shadow side of love, and it helps to
restore love in our hearts."

"There is a growing body of literature on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that suggests that PTSD has physiological elements - that is, heightened activation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) - as well as psychological elements. Articles and books about the physiology and psychobiology of stress and PTSD abound (see, among many others: Figley 1985, Loewenstein 1993, Puglisi-Allegra & Oliverio (Eds.) 1990, Scrignar 1988, van der Kolk 1993). PTSD may be the condition that finally convinces both the medical and psychological communities that there is a connection between the mind and the body."
