Directory: Professional Mental Health Resources, Reading, Reference, Tools, More PsychIN Directory Resources for Mental Health ProfessionalsInstructions, Overview, Legal & Tour Concept, organization, annotation, design: Robert A. Yourell, LMFT Emphasizing free clinical information via journals, abstracts, media, reference, specialized search tools, portals, and other professional resources, this collapsible outline of annotated titles and links is organized by topic.
Introduction topical resources Specialized Resources, such as reference, research & search tools The remaining sections are being processed for uploading: the General Resources, including Major Portals, Broad Coverage Resources, and the Specialized Resources, including Reference, Clinical News, and Search Tools Expand, collapse and navigate the outline with your keyboard arrows or mouse (by clicking the squares). The outline below contains more details. Some of the outlines are large, so there may be a delay before they respond. If you do not have Javascript enabled, then the outline should open fully without the ability to expand and collapse. Javascript is not Java. Typically, people enable Javascript on their browsers (in Tools, Internet Options).
The links above this paragraph go to the outlines. This section (below) tells all about the directory.
The PsychIN Directory is maintained on Action Outline, a Windows outliner that I have relied on for years to organize tremendous amounts of information for many projects. Action Outline is inexpensive, fast, and simple to use. It is excellent for online research. It has rich text formatting, and can export to the web or to databases, and can import data, as well.
As of this writing, Action Outline does not have boolean searches, but True Knowledge does, and it has a very attractive interface. It allows publishing to the web, and has form-creation that allows the user to to have identical fields for entries as needed. It also allows publishing to the web.

- BROWSING: The PsychIN Directory Outline: Intuitive Layout for Browsing or Seeking
- The Directory divides into two primary areas: Topical and General. Some additional, specialized topics live at this top level in order to be handy. Reference, Search & Research Tools is a good example.
The General area holds resources of broad professional mental heath relevance. It divides them by their function. News and Timely Reading Zones is such a division. Broad topical categories, such as Clinical, make your search easier once you are in one of the General area's categories.
The Topical area holds resources that focus on a subject. It's categories help you drill intuitively to topics. An overview below "Drilling, Searching, and Getting the Most from The PsychIN Directory"gives good pointers on this and more.
- MISSION: Mission, Objectives, and the Features that Support Them
- Overall Mission& Features
The PsychIN Directory helps mental health professionals find information and resources. that are relevant, timely, and of high quality, and does so quickly and at no or least cost. High-quality links, a responsive outline structure, well-crafted categories, and helpful annotation support this mission.
Primary Objectives and Features
1) Help clinical and other mental health professionals stay up-to-date in their fields, and in mental health generally. It helps visitors save time and focus their effort by collecting materials that best support this mission into a single News and Timely Reading Zones area that links visitors to free online material of broad relevance to mental health. To make scanning for information even more efficient, this area divides into General and Clinical primary areas, and into more focused Topical areas. Visitors save time and money through access to mostly free information, quality screening, and large collections. They also save time because The PsychIN Directory has selected key subtopics from news resources that have many less useful topics to sift through.
2) Provide mental health professionals with convenient links to good, relevant reference, search and research tools. Annotation, organization, screening, and pointers to other useful areas of The PsychIN Directory support this mission, as do additional links to search areas of major sites, of journals and of journal collections. This area divides into Topical areas as well, for the same reason as in mission one.
Additional Features
The PsychIN Directory provides good quality links from which to launch deeper searches. The Topical area has many resources that can sometimes augment or substitute for search.
It also affords users at all levels of experience and training an opportunity to brainstorm or browse for topics, ideas and resources that might surprise, delight or challenge them. The Topical area offers resources, as well as a structure, that supports this value.
To help users find resources in The PsychIN Directory that are devoted to specific subjects, The PsychIN Directory has a Topical area. Some of the topical subjects are well-developed, and the rest generally have one or more major or key resources that hold substantial material or at least offer a good overview or links list for the topic. The hierarchical nature of the outline often affords broad as well as more focused resources within a topic is an easy-to-understand structure.
The Highlights articles and notes point out areas or resources of special value that you might have easily missed.
The Directory will sometimes show some internal pages of major resources when the link provides convenient access to reading and other media. The links appear as child links or may appear in additional areas of the Directory when appropriate, or both, (e.g. a significant news area or list of discussion forums).
- WANTED: Your Feedback
- Please offer your criticism, compliments, ideas and suggested resources at the Contact Center.
- SUBMITTING: Getting a Resource Listed
- If you know of a site, resource or specific item that is appropriate for mental health professionals, please send it via the Contact Center. Sites are included that have one or more of the following: substantial educational material (reading or other media), a substantial and unique link or resource list, a unique and valuable tool or feature, or a commercial service that is of value to the functioning or promotion of a clinical practice.
The site is not yet fully automated, so updates do not occur immediately. There is no reciprocal link requirement, but links to The PsychIN Directory or my own site PsychInnovations.com or my bilateral recordings are appreciated, and PsychInnovations will maintain a area of partner sites that include us among their resources.
- Special Topics
- Getting Up-To-Date Fast
- Do you want an update, but have little time to invest?Of course you're curious and prefer depth, but right now, you'd like to make sure you're on top of current events and aware of the latest thinking.
Go to the General: Reading: Journals, news, Summaries topic and spend some time in the News and Reading Zones area. Select a subtopic such as Clinical: Psychotherapy, Assessment, Etc. and scan the headlines at one of the resources. But don't dally too long. You should also hit the links of a few items in the Journals, Magazines, Article Collections and Searches to open the Specific Journals and the Summaries areas.
If you want to do a quick check on an area or two of special interest, you could drill into the Topical area, or do some searches via resources in the Reference, Search & Research Tools: Major Search Resources: Mental Health area (Psych Crawler might do the trick), or try out the search boxes at some of the resources listed earlier.
- Staying Up To Date
- Here is a collection of quick tips for keeping current.
Scan the Big Picture Links Regularly
Read the Getting Up To Date Fast mini-article and use the links there every month or two to get the big picture on mental health.
Timely Information Delivered to You
Subscribe to newsletters that not only give you the headlines, but also provide deeper information in your areas of specialty and special concern. You can have timely information sent to you. See the "Newsletters and Other Information Delivery" section to get started.
Discussion Groups
Consider joining online discussion groups. These help you network with people who share your professional interests. Members often post news, resources, training and other things of special interest to the members. When you come across something you know will be interesting, you can share it as well. If the group does not have quality posts, simply unsubscribe.
These groups allow you to scan a large number of opinions on a subject very quickly. It's like taking polls. If the opinions are consistent and unbiased enough, you have some assurance that you will agree, or you will have a good idea why not.
Because the discussions are labeled, you can decide what is worth reading. Be sure to learn about the rules and etiquette of each group before you post. Don't allow your email address to be posted to any groups that can be viewed by the public unless the address is disposable, because of spam.
Staying aware of the word on the street about mental health issues and treatments, including medications, can be helpful, too. There are many public, non-professional discussion groups on all aspects of mental health.
Looking at some of these groups can be revealing and give a stronger sense of consumer needs and experiences in areas such as medication side effects or self help techniques. Try posting the words anxiety and medication to Google Groups and see what people are saying.
Each post shows which group it came from. You can refer clients to appropriate groups for support and information. Discussion groups and consumer support portals are changing clinical fields by creating knowledgeable clients, despite the misinformation that coexists on the 'Net.
Continuing Education: Free or Fee Credit, Your Resume, and Knowledge
Keep an eye out for ways to get credit for what you read. Sour of the Directory's resources, such as Medscape, offer free continuing education credits. Should you ever need to dust off your resume, you will have additional documentation of your continuing education. Besides, the CEU tests help keep you sharp.
Books: Online Samples, Public Ratings, Pop Psychology and More
Amazon.com and other online booksellers can provide you with a sort of free professional continuing education. At Amazon, you can see what people are saying about books, and read sections of interest using the "search inside" feature. You can save money by finding out what books are getting bad comments, and learn what books to recommend to your clients for their issues.
Pop psychology is both a barometer and a shaper of public opinion and culture, and affects how people interpret the behavior of clinicians. It also provides clinicians with additional metaphors and language to use in enhancing client motivation.
Workshops and Training: Consider These Angles
Not all continuing education workshops are an efficient, cost effective way to learn. Most of the brief ones do not train you to improve your clinical skills, acting more as teasers, and provide information that you could read in resources listed here.
Add up the hours actually involved in traveling to and attending a conference, then add up the dollars. Compare these costs to those of online research and reading key books. This could free up time and money to take deeper skills-based training instead.
Of course, live training offers it's own side benefits: Personal networking can be very valuable.
You can connect business and pleasure and still deduct training and travel expenses if you follow the rules.
Of course, using the methods proposed here will put you in a more advantageous position to select good training.
Networking for Learning, Support and Business
If you prefer to eliminate or reduce costly live training, but want the benefits of networking, making personal connections via discussion groups and other means can work wonders. Remember that those words on your computer screen were typed by living, breathing people, most of whom would enjoy making a personal connection over a shared interest.
You can rapidly share ideas with colleagues by maintaining a simple web site, or having documents to email.
Staying local and getting involved with a local organization in your field allows networking on the cheap. Involvement in organizations and efforts that get you in the mix with diverse people may help you build your practice and avoid group think. I know people who have gained business and friends through lead generating groups.
- Drilling, Searching, and Getting the Most from The PsychIN Directory
- You can enjoy several advantages by using the outline structure of The PsychIN Directory to find resources. While search is often a better way to find resources on the web, specialized directories can offer hand-picked resources organized specifically for their intended audience. The PsychIN Directory has much more annotation and far more work put into its topical structure than most link lists or directories, including specialized ones. This is especially important when you consider that it is engineered primarily for finding topical professional information and free professional materials and tools for mental health.
Without a specific audience to design for, the larger directories such as ODP(The Open Directory Project) scatters resources that seem to belong together among a number of similar or nearly identical topics within a massive database that attempts to embrace all topics on the Internet. And with little useful annotation, you are still left to search and sift excessively.
Even though human-selected resources cannot approach the volume contained in automated search engines, a good directory can often get you more quickly to the best sites from which to launch further searching than a search engine can. Even though Google, the most popular search engine, prides itself on using sophisticated means of determining the popularity, and thus the value of sites, the surfer often spends much time wading through the less relevant hits, especially when it is difficult to use search terms that evade language used in irrelevant sites. This sifting is especially time-consuming when professionals search for broad, timely information, but find mostly commercial, outdated, public and personal sites that don't meet their needs.
The PsychIN Directory provides an alternative that is designed specifically for mental health professionals, and that grew out of my collection of professional resources. You may get the best results by using our site-based search rather than The PsychIN Directory structure, or using the search to find the best area of The PsychIN Directory to browse. You may find The PsychIN Directory structure helps you brainstorm, generate new and better questions, and find resources and answers you didn't know you needed.
The PsychIN Directory lists search tools that are dedicated to mental health. They often have limitations, such as being specifically for a particular publishers' journals. Such limitations can be advantageous for some searches, though they usually must be combined with other search tools that fill the gaps. The PsychIN Directory group sand annotates search and research tools to help you select them.
You get faster responses when you open and close parts of the outline, compared to the responses of most directories, saving some additional time and frustration. The technology used was selected, in part, for this advantage. The visibility of the outline structure may also prove helpful in your browsing.
- Some Practical Search Philosophy
- Timely Information on Demand: The Philosophy
Especially if you are getting started, focus on identifying good resources and search methods rather than filling your files or hard drive with helpful information. This way, you are preparing yourself for Timely Information on Demand. This means that when you need information, you get the most timely and highest quality information, rather than seeking out information that is getting out of date.
Manage Your Information and Resources Elegantly: Use an Outliner
Of course, you'll find material that you want access to on your own system for future reference. I strongly suggest that you use an outline generator. I like Action Outline, although it does not have all the features I would like. It's advantages are in quick, keyboard based actions, or mouse use, and in unlimited note sizes. You can also directly access files and web sites from links you place in your notes.
The beauty of an outline generator is that you can place information items together, whether they are articles, ideas, reference information or any other information. The hierarchical nature allows you to collapse your headings so that you limit your view to the main categories and only open the area you are working on. It is also wonderful for organizing your writing into sections. Major word processors, particularly Word, have outlining, but I would only use it for composition, not extensive information tracking. In Word, click View, Outline View and see the Help file for more information.
If you need to have an outline that also has some database functions and is very user friendly, AND can work on your PDA, Listpro is very good.
- Resource Highlights
- Special Resources
- Easily Overlooked, but Unique or Notable Resources
There are a number of special resources or topic areas that one could easily overlook. Here are a few of them.
Medscape is not just for psychiatrists. It has much free content and special features such as free continuing education credits with documentation you can print as soon as you complete the lesson. You can register for a customized experience. Sign up for the psychiatry home page, even if you aren't physician, because this is where the mental health topics reside. The focus on medication is very strong, so don't expect a well-rounded clinical resource. Nonetheless, it covers the full spectrum of diagnoses.
Clinical Consultation and Support
You may already know that much practical support can come from discussion forums, but in The PsychIN Directory's Discussion Groups, Forums area includes forums created specifically for getting input from experts. Medscape and MHSource are the ones as of this writing. (11/04)

- Making The PsychIN Directory Exceptional: Policies and Standards the Support its Mission
- This article briefly covers some of the standards and policies The PsychIN Directory follows to fulfill its mission.
- The highest priority was placed on the needs of clinicians who wish to keep up-to-date while maintaining a broad view of the field of mental health. The PsychIN Directory serves other purposes of mental health professionals as well.
- Resources are selected for their relevance to professional needs. Qualities such as credibility, substantial reading and media holdings, and special features or tools figure into their selection. Consumer sites that meet these criteria are included, and the link goes to their professionally relevant assets, when appropriate.
- Annotation guides you to the most ideal resources and saves you time by commenting on the quality, content and features of the resources, and by making comparisons. The comments are date-stamped, so you can tell if enough time has elapsed that a resource may have expanded or improved.
- The PsychIN Directory does not attempt to duplicate official, specialized lists. Where there is an official list that is kept up-to-date, The PsychIN Directory links directly to it. For example, the APA keeps a current list of its divisions, and it includes a categorical list. About.com keeps a list of APA divisions, but it is not as sophisticated, and there is no indication as to how often it is updated. That's goofy. The PsychIN Directory links directly to the APA list, because it is the official, definitive and most timely source. (11/04)
- Brief History, Future
- The PsychIN Directory began as my personal collection of sites useful to me as psychotherapist, case manager and presenter. Like many of you, whenever I searched, I would collect the best resources. Well before the Internet or Microsoft were household words, I came to rely on outlining for managing information. I started with Grand View (now deceased) then moved to Action Outline.
- A good-sized portion of my career has been in employee assistance, where there is much client turnover and great diversity of problems. This whetted my interest in having a reading routine that would cover broad newsy resources as well as doing more focused reading. The availability of free reading and general clinical news became so extensive, that it was not only a great way to stay current, but also required organization. Every time I did a session of reading, I would collect some new resources and refine the outline structure a bit.
- The PsychIN Directory became a large asset, so I decided to share it with you online.
- There are other resources that provide links for mental health professionals, so one might wonder why I would bother to publish this. My motivation stemmed from my vision of distinctive organization, annotation, and quality screening that I comment on above. The sheer quantity of resources in the outline was a pretty good reason on its own, though.
- Turning my outline into The PsychIN Directory turned into an unexpectedly big project for a while. I found logical inconsistencies in the structure and I had to comb through the information to make it consistent enough for translate into a web outline with specialized software. Then there was the matter of adding and cleaning up the annotation, and adding this front matter.
- This history actually involved several periods of time during which I tried to bring it to the web. These efforts occured across a number of years. It was like using a battering ram. The first times there was a lot of effort and fuss, and the door looked no more like it would open then when I started. Finally, it gave way. A lot of time went by between these efforts, because I could rarely justify the effort against other priorities. From time to time, I would take my fantasy of easily porting the data onto the web, polish it up and motivate myself to try again. My intermittent self-delusion got The PsychIN Directory to its first draft on the web. We'll see what the future holds.
- I have a large wish list of ways to improve The PsychIN Directory, but they will require another level of automation, and some teamwork.

- About the Software
- The PsychIN Directory is maintained on Action Outline, an outline program. Action Outline is inexpensive, fast, and simple to use. It's fans become very attached to it. Its note areas have no size limits, so it is excellent for doing online research that requires pasting in large blocks of information. It has rich text formatting, making it easier to read what you have pasted in, or to format writing to paste into Word or other programs. It can export to the web or to databases, and can import data, as well. It has been translated into Portuguese, Croatian, French, Swedish, Slovak, German, Greek, Czech, Spanish.
As of this writing, Action Outline does not have boolean searches, but True Knowledge does, and it has a very attractive interface. It allows publishing to the web, and has form-creation that allows the user to to have identical fields for entries as needed. It also allows publishing to the web.
Two programs convert The PsychIN Directory's data into a web-based outline. First, Free Mind converts the listings into XML, a formatting method designed to make data more portable. Then MMTree converts these data into the outline that you can use online. There is a number of programs that create online outlines, but MMTree is the only one I know of that creates responsive background highlighting to aid navigation. Few such programs afford keyboard arrow control as this one does.
FreeMind is a free program that displays information as a flow chart or mind map, but the user can expand and collapse its topics. It is not good for large amounts of information, however. There are some additional features, but that's basically it. It can export to HTML, and can import data easily. FreeMind was first created by Jörg Müller, and further developed by Daniel Polanský, with the help of others as a team effort at SourceForge.net, a site that facilitates the work of open source and freeware designers.
mmTree is by Miika Nurminen. As of this writing, he is the distance-learning designer for the University of Jyväskylä, Department of Mathematics and Statistics. He created a free program called MarkTree upon which mmTree is based. MarkTree creates a responsive outline from your browser's bookmarks.
- Why I Didn't Use a Links Directory Program
- I did not use a links directory, like Yahoo, even though this is normally the way to handle this kind of material, especially when it is in a hierarchical structure. I decided to use an outline structure for a number of reasons.
One is ease of maintenance, because this will allow me to continue to work in my outliner and periodically export the information to update the online version. Speedy responsiveness to the user is another. Rather than having the program work from a database and reload your screen with data, you can open and close sections very quickly. The outline format I used is more transparent and informative than link directories, as well. Using the outliner will allow rapid improvement in the outline structure (heirarchy) based on user feedback, as well as quickly moving resources into the proper position in the outline.
There are strong arguments for using a database to serve the information, but I would like to wait until I can have automation that will support my wish list for The PsychIN Directory.
